M. Michelle Hood, FACHE

President and CEO, EMHS (Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems)

Through the leadership of EMHS president and CEO, Michelle Hood, EMHS is well on its way to becoming a national leader in healthcare delivery.

Since Michelle’s arrival in 2006, EMHS has been aggressively pursuing a bold vision while working to optimize its work through collaboration. In a region and state with limited resources, collaboration has helped EMHS to avoid duplication and become more efficient, while creating the kind of healthcare delivery system that is best for the people of Maine. Intra-organizational collaboration has optimized the resources within the system – shared deliberation, expertise, resources, and goals. With the help of the EMHS Board of Directors and EMHS leadership, the system continues to focus on opportunities for working together and standardizing best practices.

Michelle has also made it her mission to reach outside the walls of EMHS to embrace organizations that share our community health mission. The OneMaine Health Collaborative, for instance, brought EMHS together with two other major health systems, MaineHealth, based in Portland and MaineGeneral Health, based in Kennebec County. The OneMaine agenda is extensive and includes efforts to access and pursue statewide community health needs and to partner with academic organizations to assure the future supply of healthcare professionals. The OneMaine collaborative is also supporting technology that will allow hospital electronic medical records to interconnect, allowing caregivers across the state access to current healthcare information.

EMHS employees have found Michelle to be passionate about her work. She calls the delivery of healthcare services tremendously challenging while at the same time rewarding. She has encouraged the EMHS team by stating, “There is no more noble work than providing healthcare; whether a clinician, physician, administrator, community board member, or hospital volunteer, the work we all do together is very important.” Michelle is working with all teams to accomplish big goals. “I like to describe myself as being able to establish vision and work toward a future state … I am detail oriented and analytical in approach. I enjoy all aspects of healthcare, so system administration is a great fit for me.”

Before arriving at EMHS, Michelle was president and CEO of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System, Montana Region, as well as president and CEO of its flagship hospital, St. Vincent Healthcare. She received her Bachelor of Science in 1978 at Purdue University and her Master of Health Care Administration at Georgia State University in 1981. Her early career included roles of associate hospital director at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta Georgia, executive vice president and chief operating officer of St. Vincent’s Hospital (of now Ascension Health) in Birmingham, Alabama and chief administrative officer of Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. Michelle and husband, Russell Hood have two adult children.
