Miller Drug and McKesson Announce New Relationship
Miller Drug is pleased to announce an innovative new relationship with McKesson, a national medical supply and pharmaceutical distribution company, to automate their prescription central fill processes starting in early April.
Miller Drug chief operating officer, Vincent Mainella, shares, “This is a positive step forward. Automating central fill will not only allow Miller Drug to become more efficient and cost effective, but will allow our pharmacists more time to counsel patients and assist with other customer service needs.”
McKesson’s automated process will handle 70 percent of Miller Drug’s prescription retail business and 70 to 80 percent of the long-term care prescriptions. Leading edge quality and safety measures are in place to ensure accuracy. Mainella continues, “Not only will McKesson’s state-of-the-art equipment have verification check points, but our Miller Drug pharmacists will check all prescriptions both on the front end and before a prescription is ever given to a patient or client.”
As a result of this change, 11 Miller Drug employees will transition to employees of McKesson. “We are working with our staff members to ensure a smooth transition,” says Mainella. “Rest assured, they will receive our full attention and support during the next few months as we move toward implementing this new technology and process.”
Miller Drug is locally and owned operated by EMHS. This new relationship recognizes EMHS as one of the first health delivery systems in the nation to partner with McKesson to implement the new model to automate the central fill process.
The Miller family opened the first Miller Drug location in 1979, located at 210 State Street in Bangor. Highly regarded in the community, in 2010, Miller Drug merged into EMHS and experienced immediate growth. Today, Miller Drug is comprised of four retail locations, one long-term care pharmacy, and a central mail pharmacy. Miller Drug employs more than 100 people and serves Maine communities from Millinocket to Calais to Portland.
