Following a successful Medicare survey, and a lot of hard work over the last 24 months, Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has recommended ending the emergency receivership of Down East Community Hospital (DECH), in which Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems (EMHS) has been acting as emergency receiver. In June of 2009, the State of Maine asked EMHS to become the emergency receiver and operator of DECH. EMHS agreed and immediately got to work on correcting deficiencies that could have affected the hospital’s Medicare/Medicaid provider status.

A Waterville accountant has been elected chairman of the EMHS Board of Directors. P. James Nicholson, CPA was elected at the EMHS annual meeting of directors held June 16 in Brewer. Evelyn Silver of Bangor was elected vice-chair.

Healthcare providers in Maine and across the nation work very hard to deliver safe, quality care to their patients. At EMHS, we’ve been working toward “Zero Defects,” which means preventing infections and eliminating serious medical errors. Preventing or even reducing the frequency of these events will improve care and lower costs at the same time.

EMHS president and CEO Michelle Hood, FACHE announced today that Daniel B. Coffey has been appointed president and CEO of The Acadia Hospital effective immediately.
